Wednesday: Shower and thunderstorm coverage higher today

The weak cold front that has been responsible for our unsettled weather the last couple of days will slowly sink southeast through this evening. Showers and thunderstorms will once again pop up during the afternoon across east-central Ohio. The hi-res models show a little better coverage today across the region. So, it looks like our chances of getting rain today are a bit higher than yesterday.

While there is not much of a severe threat, a few thunderstorms today could produce gusty wind. There is also the potential for heavy rain with any storms. Storms will move fairly quickly so any heavy rainfall will be brief.

SPC UPDATE 12:37 PM 08/08/18

The highest risk for severe storms this afternoon will be greatest south and east of the Valley.

TIMING
While A spotty shower can’t be ruled out this morning, as it was yesterday, odds for showers and thunderstorms increase as we head toward lunch time. Scattered storms will become more numerous in the mid-afternoon and evening mostly south of US-30. Hi-res furturecast radar simulation today through midnight:

Or, another way to look at our rain and storm odds today:

NOTE: Odds based on the New Philadelphia area. Your mileage may vary.

It’s been generally pretty dry here in the Valley and most areas could use some rain at this point.

With the amount of cloud cover and those showers and storms around, temperatures today should be a bit cooler with afternoon temps in the low 80s.

TONIGHT AND THURSDAY
The threat of showers and thunderstorms will continue into this evening and taper off overnight. An area of weak high pressure will build for Thursday to bring back the sunshine and temperatures around average for the afternoon high.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Unsettled weather will return Thursday night with another cold front due to slide south across Ohio and virtually stall out nearby. Showers and thunderstorms will return on Friday and remain a possibility through the weekend. The weekend doesn’t look like a complete washout but spotty showers and storms in any one location will be a constant threat.

For those folks like me who look forward to the Perseids, this will not be a good year in our area. Clouds will most likely be a huge problem.

Temperatures through the weekend should run about average.
