Tusc Weekend: Showers, Storms, and Turning Colder

The weekend weather outlook looks pretty grim as a nearly stationary frontal boundary that’s been hanging around the vicinity the last two days will wobble north and south of the area through the weekend.

A low-pressure system is expected to track northeast into the Great Lakes region tonight and push the frontal boundary northward as a warm front. Saturday morning may start out with some noisy, non-severe thunderstorms as the front slides north through the area.

Saturday won’t be a washout, though. There can be a break for a while late in the morning and early afternoon. We could even see some sun poking through the cloud cover at times. It will also allow the atmosphere to destabilize ahead of an approaching cold front. Depending on how unstable things can become, some of the thunderstorms could be strong to severe.

SPC Day 1 Outlook; Updated 10:30 AM 04/05

As of today (Friday), from around 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM Saturday would be the approximate timing for any strong to severe storms in our area.

Whether storms can be severe or not will depend on how far north the warm front gets on Saturday. Either way, showers and storms will continue for much of Saturday night. Rainfall could be moderate to heavy at times.

Unfortunately, Sunday doesn’t look much better. Showers will linger, and temperatures will be sharply colder. Daytime highs on Sunday won’t get much higher than the low-40s – a 30° difference from Saturday’s high. And it won’t be impossible to see snowflakes mixing in toward Sunday evening with snow showers early Sunday night.

The only positive result is that the low pressure system will finally push the front off to the south, bringing an end to the rain and thunderstorms. The colder air will stick around for a while, though with a reinforcing shot of cold moving into the region on Tuesday. Temperatures will begin to rebound during the second half of next week.
