Sunday morning winter storm update

The Winter Storm Warning in effect was allowed to expire on schedule at 10:00 am this morning. Light snow showers/flurries from the storm have mostly all shifted east. A band of lake effect snow showers will move through the region during the afternoon and this may produce an additional inch or two of snow in some areas.

The most concerning weather feature today and Monday will be the very cold temperatures and wind chills. Temperatures today will not rise much more than they are this morning and most neighborhoods will remain in the mid-teens this afternoon. Wind chill values will hover around 0° with a gusty northwest wind around 15 mph continues today. Lows tonight will dip well into the single digits and breezy conditions will continue to produce wind chill values as low as -12°.

A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for tonight.

Arctic high pressure will build Monday allowing skies to clear and bring us some sunshine. Temperatures will remain bitterly cold, however. Afternoon highs will again only reach the low teens and wind chill values will remain well-below 0° for the better part of the day. At best, wind chills will top out in the single digits tomorrow.

TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY
With high pressure remaining in control, expect another dry and mostly sunny day on Tuesday. Temperatures will recover to the low 30s in the afternoon.

The slightly warmer temperatures and dry sunny weather will be brief. Temperatures on Wednesday will warm to near the mid-40s ahead of a cold front. Precipitation will begin moving in Tuesday night ahead of this system and again, we’re presented with a tricky forecast.

Temperatures early Tuesday night will be cold enough at first to support snow showers. As temperatures warm overnight, snow will change over to rain. With temperatures well above freezing during the day Wednesday, rain should be the main precip type. As temperatures cool Wednesday night with the passing of the cold front, I look for rain to switch back to snow. Any leftover snow should taper off and end Thursday morning.

A second cold front will affect our weather toward the end of the week. If we can take the European ensembles to heart, this late week cold front may bring a sustained period of cold temperatures to the region.
