Friday the 13th thunderstorm update

Warm, humid. and breezy conditions today. Shower and thunderstorm chances will increase late in the day and continue into Saturday. The crossing cold front responsible for the rain will eventually usher in drier air on Saturday.

It’s going to be another warm and humid one again today. The good news is that relief from the humidity will arrive on Saturday with a cold front. The front won’t come through quietly, though. Odds for showers and storms will increase late today as the front slowly approaches east-central Ohio.

The really unstable air will set up today in northwestern portions of the state. The Storm Prediction Center has this region highlighted for a decent chance for severe thunderstorms today. Activity won’t arrive here in the Valley until after sunset. By then, the atmosphere will not be quite as unstable and severe thunderstorms will have less energy to tap into.

Today looks to remain dry locally. Temperatures will warm to the upper 80s this afternoon and it will gradually turn breezy. Winds out of the south could contain 15 to 25 mph gusts at times.

The hi-res model does show a line of thunderstorms developing and moving through northeast Ohio early this evening, but as it travels east into more stable air, it loses much of its punch before getting into our area.

While a thunderstorm with strong wind gusts can’t be completely ruled out tonight, severe storms are not likely locally. And, if you’re headed to an area football game this evening, be aware of approaching thunderstorms and lightning – especially after 8:00 PM.

The front will slowly push through east-central Ohio tonight accompanied by showers and a few rumbles of thunder. Once the front clears our area early Saturday morning, odds for showers will subside.

Saturday will bring improving weather through the day and we should see sunshine start to break out by mid-morning. Saturday afternoon highs will be about ten degrees cooler than today with upper 70s expected for the Valley. And, it will become noticeably less humid. Dew points today will be near 70° but those will be replaced by dew points in the upper-50s Saturday afternoon.

Sunday will be a nice late summer day with plenty of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 80s.
