Posted 10:19 AM Sunday 08/16/2026 | The first batch of rain that moved through very early this morning continues to track east into western PA. Our morning analysis indicates a warm front just off to the west, bisecting Central Ohio, will continue to lift into the east-central Ohio region as the morning progresses. The early morning activity has put a damper on instability this morning, limiting the chances for additional severe storms and heavy rainfall for the time being.
Although scattered instances of showers and storms will certainly be possible through the rest of the morning, the lull in widespread rain and storms should persist through the rest of our Sunday morning and early afternoon. Conditions will turn oppressively humid this afternoon behind the warm front as incoming moisture increases, pushing dew point into the mid-to-upper 70s.
Satellite imagery this morning does show some clearing off to the west that will probably work into the region as the day progresses. The amount of sun we manage to receive will impact instability this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will likely redevelop in this moist, unstable air mass during the mid-afternoon and travel through east-central Ohio through the evening.
Some storms that are expected to move through later today could contain damaging wind gusts. Conditions also favor a low, non-zero tornado risk. The setup for heavy rainfall rates and flash flooding also continues into the evening.
It’s interesting to note that two activity modes are depicted in the modeling, depending on the model type. The AI model camp shows a line of thunderstorms while conventional modeling suggests clustered groups of thunderstorms. In both cases, though, the intensity of thunderstorms will likely depend on how much clearing we manage to get earlier in the day.
Eventually, thunderstorm activity and intensity will gradually wane toward sunset with the loss of daytime heating. A few showers may linger overnight, but drier air will begin moving into the region behind a cold front on Monday, bringing an end to the heavy rain and flood threat.
High pressure then builds into the Great Lakes region on Monday, so we can expect dry weather through at least Tuesday night. Another system will push a cold front through eastern Ohio sometime on Wednesday, bringing the next round of precipitation (TBD). Cooler, below-average temperatures and far less humid conditions will follow for the second half of the week. (Autumn Preview?)
