The Risk of Severe Thunderstorms Return This Afternoon in the Tuscarawas Valley

After a cool start to the morning, temperatures and dewpoints will quickly increase behind a warm front that will lift through east-central Ohio this morning. Temperatures will quickly warm to the low-80s by lunchtime time and it will become noticeably more humid this afternoon as dewpoints climb to the mid-60s.

Today’s Weather Map

Showers and a non-severe thunderstorm will accompany the warm front, but any rain will quickly exit the region as the front clears our area to the north. Cool temperatures in the 50s early this morning will quickly increase into the low-80s by the early afternoon. Conditions will also turn noticeably muggy as dewpoints climb to the mid-60s.

With a warm, moist, and unstable atmosphere in place across eastern Ohio, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop as a cold front moves into the region this afternoon and evening. Some of these storms could turn severe with strong wind gusts as the main concern. Hail and an isolated tornado can’t be completely ruled out, but these threats are much lower.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has all of the east-central Ohio region highlighted in the Level 2, Slight Risk category for severe thunderstorms later today.

Isolated thunderstorms may initiate early this afternoon (1:00/2:00 PM). These can then morph into a more linear line of thunderstorms late in the afternoon and early this evening.

Storms will travel southeastward by sunset and any potential storms that follow will run into a worked-over atmosphere with lower chances for any additional severe weather.

FRIDAY
Chances for showers and storms gradually increase on Friday ahead of a secondary cold front due late in the day. The risk of severe storms will return Friday evening, although at a much lower chance. Instability will be much less supportive of severe thunderstorms, but gusty winds and small hail seem possible.

As of today, it’s a low-end severe threat (Level 1 on a scale of 1-5), but we’ll keep you updated with any changes.
