Last weekend brought mainly sunny skies, very comfortable temperatures in the 70s, and pleasantly dry humidity levels with dew points in the 50s. That’s not going to be the case here this weekend.

This second weekend of August is shaping up to be uncomfortably hot. Temperatures locally are expected to range from the upper 80s to the low 90s in the Tuscarawas Valley. While the humidity won’t be off the charts, it will be noticeably muggier with dew points settling in the mid-60s range. That puts our heat index values in the mid-90s area during peak heating in the mid/late afternoons.

Modeling does suggest that temperatures will cool off to the mid-60s overnight. So, if you don’t have air conditioning, at least it will cool off nicely after midnight. Temperatures didn’t cool off much more than the mid-70s at night during that last stretch of heat in July.

With upper-level high pressure in control, prospects for any rain through Sunday will be meager at best. The last appreciable rain (=/+ 0.10″) in New Philadelphia occurred on July 28. Our lawns and gardens could use a drink at this point.

NEXT WEEK
High pressure is likely to maintain above-normal temperatures through Monday and Tuesday. The hottest period will run Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Expect daytime highs around 90° to 92°.
The upper-level ridge of high pressure will weaken during the mid-week period. The increase in cloud cover will help temper daytime highs. While there are model discrepancies, the general trend brings an influx of moisture, which could lead to an increase in shower and thunderstorm chances during the latter part of the week.
Despite the increase in precipitation chances, the odds of severe storms remain low at this point.
Thanks for taking a few minutes to catch up with our local weather. Have a great, and safe, weekend.
