Light snow showers will continue to push out of the region this morning as a weak disturbance exits. We should see a nice little break in snowfall until around mid-afternoon before the next round of snow moves into the Valley, accompanied by a cold front.
Chances of snow will increase once again this afternoon (around/after 2 PM or so) with widespread snow showers blanketing the region by this evening. Snow showers will likely continue overnight, then taper off and end during the pre-dawn hours on New Year’s Day. Generally speaking, we should end up with around 1 to 3 inches of snow out of this last round.
There is a potential for periods of heavier snowfall tonight along the cold front as it moves through the area. These heavier snowfall rates, coupled with wind gusts in the 20- to 25-mph range, could impact visibility at times tonight. The heavier snowbands are most likely to occur across our area from around 7 PM to 11 PM. Those locations that see heavier snow bands could pick up an extra quick inch of snow in a short time.
This will be a quick-hitter. Drier air will quickly wrap into the system, bringing an end to snow showers before dawn on Thursday. Temperatures will remain cold enough that snow ratios will run in the 18:1 to 21:1 range, resulting in light and fluffy snow.
Expect a cold New Year’s Day behind the front with daytime temperatures about 15° colder than normal with wind chill values in the single digits.
Although temperatures are expected to remain below normal, a period of dry and quiet weather conditions is favored from Thursday night through the weekend. Temperatures may moderate early next week.
