Saturday AM Severe Weather Update: Severe Storms Possible Today

Not much has changed regarding today’s severe weather setup. A potent cold front is still on track to slide southeastward through eastern Ohio this afternoon, accompanied by a line of showers and thunderstorms out ahead of the front.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center maintains a Level 2, Slight Risk of strong gusty thunderstorms for much of eastern Ohio.

SPC Day 1 Outlook

Damaging straight-line wind remains the primary threat with these storms, although there is also a low-end probability of hail and isolated tornadoes.

Today’s severe thunderstorm threats

Cloud cover this morning will play a big role in whether storms can intensify later in the day. Cloudiness heading into the early afternoon would hamper heating and lead to lower instability aloft. Clearing skies and sunshine would have the opposite effect.

The probability of a tornado is very low, but not zero.

The risk of thunderstorms will decrease after 6/7 PM, but showers may continue into later tonight.

After this string of 70° and 80° days, temperatures will turn much cooler on Sunday and Monday. Nighttime temperatures Sunday night and Monday night are likely to dip to or near freezing. It’s fairly certain to say that a frost/freeze warning will be issued for these two nights.

Temperatures will gradually improve by mid-week next week.
