Tuscarawas Valley Rain so far This Month

Posted 10:28 AM Monday | We’ve certainly had our fill of rain so far this month across the Tuscarawas Valley, and many folks in the area are voicing their displeasure on the various social media sites. So, I thought I would take some time this morning to dig deeper just to see where we stand so far this month.

Officially, we did set a new rainfall record yesterday at the New Phila airport at 2.51 inches for August 16. That broke the old record of 1.73 inches set in 1992. I noticed a few backyard rain gauges registered more than that official measurement, especially in a few locations in the northern half of Tuscarawas County.

All totaled so far this month, we’ve chalked up 5.66 inches of rain (officially). Normally, we expect to see about 3.65 inches for the entire month in our area. The majority of all that rain fell during the two rounds of precipitation on Sunday – very early morning and the mid-afternoon/evening.

If the month were to end today, this August would rank as the sixth wettest August in the last 30 years.

MORE RAIN COMING?
A cold front will slide south through east-central Ohio today, and that may fire off additional scattered showers and sub-severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Generally, rainfall rates are expected to decrease through the day. While some locations could see moderate rainfall at times with today’s activity, rates should be considerably less than we saw yesterday.

FutureCast Radar – 12:00 PM this afternoon.

High pressure will build into the Great Lakes late today and tonight, pushing that cold front off to our south. That will bring dry weather and a good amount of sunshine to the Valley on Tuesday. Dry conditions should continue into Wednesday before a second cold front moves through the region later in the day. This will bring another period of showers and thunderstorms to the area, but without the ingredients for severe storms this time.
