Winds whipped through the Tuscarawas Valley over the last 24 hours in association with a storm system and sharp cold front. Below are some of the peak wind gusts observed by area weather stations. The highest gust reported at Harry Clever Field (New Philadelphia) was 48 MPH clocked at 1:07 PM this afternoon.
Now that the cold front has cleared south and east of the area, winds will gradually decrease through the evening and overnight. There can still be some strong gusts at times through the evening but wind speeds will generally trend slowly downward.
As of 3:00 PM, AEP is reporting 2,023 customers without power in Tuscarawas County. The last report I saw said that 106,000 folks were without power across all of Ohio.
A Wind Advisory remains in effect for our area until midnight tonight. I suspect this will be canceled earlier.
Warm temperatures through the morning and early afternoon will also trend downward tonight. The official high temperature of 65° in New Phila will drop to the low-30s by sunrise Sunday. For those wondering, the record high for today’s date is 71°.
Tomorrow will be a bright sunny day but temperatures will top out only in the mid-40s. The wind tomorrow will be much calmer with southwest 6 to 10 MPH.
