Low-End Threat of Strong Thunderstorms Saturday Afternoon and Evening

Posted Saturday, March 30 by Joe

Showers will overspread east-central Ohio today as low pressure crosses the region. While instability during the afternoon will be limited, there can be some potential for severe thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of our area under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 on a scale of 1-5) of severe storms mainly during the latter part of the day.

The main concern with thunderstorms today is the potential for large hail. Although a lesser threat, storms could also produce strong wind gusts.

LOCAL TIMING
While the threat of strong storms is limited, the best opportunity for them in our area will be between 4 PM and 8 PM.

Hi-res FutureCast Radar snapshot at 6:00 pm.

The risk of severe storms will decrease and end late this evening and tonight as the system’s cold front exits the region. This front will stall south of the area and remain stationary through Easter Sunday. This should keep most of the rain in southern Ohio for Easter.

The frontal boundary is expected to drift northward as a warm front on Monday returning the threat of widespread rain and a few thunderstorms to the Tuscarawas Valley Sunday night and Monday. The potential for strong thunderstorms and heavy rain will also return with the warm front on Monday.
