Who got rain? Local rain amounts with Friday’s storms

The Tuscarawas Valley welcomed some desperately needed rain yesterday and last night thanks to the showers and thunderstorms that moved through the area last evening and overnight.

A look at some of our area’s privately owned weather stations gives a pretty decent indication of how much rain fell. The shaded background represents radar rainfall estimates.

While the rain is certainly a blessing, it will make little difference in our serious drought situation. Our area is currently running a 6 to 8-inch deficit in precipitation over the past 90 days. The lack of sufficient precipitation this summer is not only drying up lawns and gardens but it’s also having a big impact on area crops and livestock.

Temperatures today and Sunday will be much cooler behind that cold front. We will, however, warm back up to above-normal temperatures through the upcoming work week. Another extended dry weather period also looks like a good bet over the next seven to ten days. Despite yesterday’s rain, this will only serve to intensify the drought in our area.

ABOUT PERSONAL WEATHER STATIONS (PWS)
PWS are weather stations installed and maintained by individuals on their property. These weather stations are connected to the internet and report to various weather networks. (This is also how I can report current temperatures in multiple neighborhoods on TUSCWeather.) If you would be interested in setting up a weather station to automatically report weather conditions to the NWS and other weather networks, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, and I’ll be happy to explain further. (We could use a PWS in the Gnadenhutten/Port Washington area in particular.)

  1. Thanks, Joe, for the precip info. I think I live fairly close to you on the south side, but for what it’s worth I got .23” from the frontal passage. I was hoping for more, but at least nothing severe came our way. I appreciate all your excellent weather info!
