A Cold Front Could Bring Strong/Severe Storms on Sunday

While the risk is low in our area, a line of showers and thunderstorms could bring a late-season round of severe weather to parts of northeast and east-central Ohio Sunday afternoon.

Sunday will likely start out sunny and seasonably warm but clouds will increase in the early afternoon ahead of a potent cold front that will travel across eastern Ohio later in the afternoon. SW winds will pick up as well in the afternoon with gusts in the 15 to 25 mph range.

There is a low-end chance that some storms could be strong to severe and the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of eastern Ohio in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 on a scale of 1-5) of severe thunderstorms tomorrow.

The main threat is the potential of damaging wind gusts. The wind tomorrow will be gusty anyway regardless of thunderstorms. In addition, there is also a low-end but non-zero (2%) risk of hail and an isolated tornado in place.

This is by no means a slam dunk. The threat of severe thunderstorms impacting our area will depend greatly on the amount of daytime heating we can achieve and the timing of the front. As things stand today, the risk of severe storms is slightly higher north of the Valley.

Currently, the highest opportunity of thunderstorms moving through the Valley is from around 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The risk of severe weather will decrease rapidly after 8:00 pm and the exit of the front.

COOLER TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEK
Much cooler air will move into the region behind Sunday’s front. Temperatures Sunday night will likely dip to average (46°-ish) and below-average Monday night. Daytime highs next week will only reach the mid-60s. A building ridge of high pressure will keep the region dry through the upcoming week. Unfortunately, this means drought conditions will likely persist into mid-October.

  1. Good info. I’m impressed. Other apps don’t cover what I want to know as well as yours does.
