TUESDAY
Showers are likely today with a warm front crossing eastern Ohio. Most of the rain falls during the morning into the early afternoon. Rain chances diminish later this afternoon into the evening. Temperatures today will warm to the low 60s and we’ll remain in the low 50s overnight.
It seems everyone gets interested in the weather when word of a storm starts hitting social media. All of the data hasn’t gelled quite yet but there is enough now to give us a decent look at how things might evolve over the next few days. The following is the most likely scenario with what we know now regarding the storm system expected during the latter part of the week:
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY
Confidence is increasing on the first snow of the season for the Tuscarawas Valley during this timeframe. A strong storm system will travel into the Great Lakes region on Wednesday. Once this low pressure arrives it will meander around the Great Lakes for a couple of days before finally getting kicked out over the Atlantic Ocean toward the end of the weekend.
An impressive cold front associated with this system will cross the east-central Ohio region on Wednesday afternoon. Rain showers will develop ahead and along the front and spread across the region.
The cold front looks to clear our area by Wednesday evening ushering in much colder air. A transition from rain to wet snow is possible late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Periods of rain and snow showers are likely through the daytime hours on Thursday. Temperatures locally drop below freezing again after sunset Thursday night. Rain will transition back to snow showers overnight.
The front will not only bring rain, snow, and cold air but also some gusty wind. Strong winds aloft will mix down to the surface on Wednesday afternoon and continue through Thursday. Wind gusts could reach as high as 35 mph on occasion during this period.
FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY
Temperatures will warm to the low-40s on Friday and mid-40s by Saturday. Precipitation will continue but it appears at this time it will be all rain. Precipitation chances decrease on Sunday and Monday as the storm system moves off the East Coast and into the Atlantic.
LOCAL IMPACTS
This storm looks to have minimal impact in our area. A quick check of the area road temperatures this morning has surface temperatures in the mid-50s. Most snow should melt leaving mainly wet travel conditions. The only exception would be if any bands of heavy snowfall develop Wednesday and Thursday night. Should heavy snowfall occur slushy snow accumulation would be possible in those spots Thursday and Friday mornings.
Strong wind gusts are likely to be ongoing Wednesday night through Friday. This could lead to some power outages.
BOTTOM LINE
A strong storm system will bring colder temperatures, rain, wet snow, and gusty wind to our area on Wednesday and into the weekend. Precipitation types will vary between rain and snow throughout the period. Some wet snow accumulation will be possible in our area. (Estimated snow amounts coming soon) Wind gusts could reach 35 mph at times – especially Wednesday night and Thursday. Expect changes in the forecast going forward.
