A stagnant frontal boundary that’s been the source for daily showers and storms the last several days will finally lift north today as a warm front. With this feature, we can expect another round of scattered showers and storms to move through the Tuscarawas Valley this afternoon.
While the storms will be scattered and disorganized later today, some isolated storms could get tall enough to produce strong updrafts. The moisture-rich atmosphere could also bring a heavy downpour in some spots.
With this in mind, the Storm Prediction Center has all of our area painted in a Level 1, Marginal Risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon for the potential of strong wind gusts.
The risk of thunderstorms, strong or not, will decrease as the evening progresses. A humid airmass will keep temperatures overnight fairly warm and muggy.
This same frontal boundary will reverse course on Tuesday and travel south through eastern Ohio as a cold front. With a warm and humid airmass in place Tuesday, these storms could become better organized. Again, some of the storms could produce strong winds and heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon.
Once Tuesday’s cold front clears the region Tuesday evening, a drier airmass will flow into the region, allowing skies to clear quickly. The result will be a mostly sunny Wednesday. Temperatures locally will ease back to the mid-80s with noticeably less humidity.
A reinforcing cold front may develop on Thursday, but so far today, the modeling is undecided on when the front arrives in our neck of the woods. It will depend on the timing of the front whether we can expect another round of showers/storms on Thursday. This will hopefully come into better focus with today’s late model runs or early tomorrow.
So far, the Independence Day forecast looks ideal – seasonably warm summertime temperatures, less humid conditions, and mainly sunny skies. Temperatures will warm back up to above normal values as we get to Saturday and Sunday. Chances of showers and storms will creep back into the forecast as well.
