There will be a couple of chances for light snow this week, but the highest weather impacts will come from the cold temperatures and breezy winds set to move into the region.
The first low pressure system tracks across the Great Lakes Sunday night into Monday and will bring low odds for a few scattered snow showers later today (Sunday) through Monday morning. Mainly light snow accumulation is likely with this first round of scattered snow showers and/or flurries.
Snow chances will be more likely tonight through Sunday morning, then taper off Monday afternoon. Most locations in our area are expected to receive an inch or less of new snow from Sunday through early Monday. Locations south of New Philadelphia may not get any snow at all.
Temperatures will remain cold enough that snow from this little system will be light and fluffy. Despite the low amounts expected tonight into early Monday, any snow will accumulate easily on roads and highways and may cause some travel issues during the Monday morning commute.
Tonight’s system will also push a cold front through eastern Ohio and some of the coldest temperatures of the season. Monday’s high temperature will likely occur during the morning just before sunrise, then gradually fall through the rest of the day as arctic cold flows eastward.
In addition to the colder air, a breezy west wind will bring some brutally cold wind chill values. Expect single-digit wind chills Monday morning to slide toward sub-zero values (0° to -5°) by sunset Monday evening.
Tuesday will be the coldest day of the week, despite the sunshine that breaks out. Daytime highs won’t get much higher than the upper teens, and a breezy west wind will maintain below-zero wind chills up until lunchtime. Wind chills will only reach the single digits during the afternoon and evening.
Temperatures are expected to moderate some on Wednesday and may warm to near freezing during peak heating in the afternoon. Another clipper-like system sliding across the Great Lakes brings yet another cold front through eastern Ohio. Once again, an influx of arctic air will bring another round of light snow and cold temperatures to the Valley to finish the workweek – although not AS cold as Monday and Tuesday.
NEXT WEEKEND
Although confidence is rather low at this time, recent model runs have trended colder temperatures into next weekend and beyond. There is a large spread in solutions, though it is looking like this could be an extended period of cold that could settle over the region.
