The Cold Settles In; Weekend Winter Storm Rumors?

Well, here we are right in the thick of winter. Our coldest temperatures of the season occur during this period of winter, usually mid and late January. This year will not be an exception. Today’s cold front will usher in the coldest temperatures and wind chills we’ve not seen for some time.

Temperatures will fall as we go through Monday afternoon. By sunset this evening, we’ll be looking at air temperatures in the low teens. Gusty winds will translate to wind chill values already below zero. And, it will continue to get colder through the night. Wind chill values can be as cold as -10° as you head out Tuesday morning.

Tuesday will likely turn out to be THE coldest day of the season…so far. High pressure will bring deceiving sunshine on Tuesday, but make no mistake – it will be a very cold and blustery day. Daytime air temperatures will only reach the mid-to-upper teens. Wind chills will linger below zero through the morning before they creep up to single digits in the afternoon, thanks to the breezy west wind.

Temperatures across the Valley will warm a bit on Wednesday ahead of the next low pressure system moving through the Great Lakes. Daytime highs will likely reach the mid-30s, but those warmer temperatures may also bring another round of snow. Snow amounts from this next system won’t amount to much here in our area – maybe a half to one inch of new snow. Snow amounts will climb higher as you travel north.

Wednesday’s system will also drag another cold front across eastern Ohio. Temperatures will once again trend colder each day as the weekend approaches. By Friday, we’re looking at daytime highs in the low-20s. Air temperatures on Friday night could hover near zero-degrees.

WEEKEND WINTER STORM RUMORS
Some may have caught word of a potential winter storm set to impact the eastern US by the weekend. As of Monday afternoon, the bulk of this storm should remain well to our south. It could be a close shave, though. This is only Monday, and there will be plenty of time to watch this for any northward progress moving ahead.

European Model: Early Sunday morning

Much will depend on the strong high pressure sitting over the northern half of the country. Hopefully, this high will be strong enough to keep the storm far enough south that any impacts will be minor. We’ll just have to monitor trends in the coming days.

LONG-RANGE OUTLOOK – COLD
Whether a weekend storm develops and impacts our area or not, there are strong indications that cold temperatures will likely prevail through the end of the month. The latest model trends and the NWS Climate Prediction Center pretty much agree that below-average temperatures can be expected to finish out January and perhaps spill into the first week of February.

  1. Hi Joe, is this next winter storm kind of a flattened panhandle hook, as Dick Goddard used to call it? Thanks for all you do, Joe- I’m very thankful Tuscarawas county has you! 👀

  2. I cleared 1/3” of snow off the pavement early this morning. Then a snow squall put down almost that much again…but as the sky began to clear the wind blew all the pavement clear! 😃 I hope that possible weekend system stays away from our region! Thank you Joe!
