Severe Storms Are Possible Today Across the Tuscarawas Valley Area

Tuesday, 08/06/24 10:00 am

Expect warm and humid conditions today across the region ahead of a wave of low pressure tracks east through the region this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop along this boundary and travel east into east-central Ohio later in the afternoon.

Some thunderstorms late today could be severe. the main threat is damaging wind gusts but hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible.

The Storm Prediction Center has our area highlighted in the Level 2, Slight Risk category for severe storms today. The main threat will come from the potential of damaging wind gusts. There is also a low-end potential for hail and isolated tornadoes with today’s storms.

Dewpoints this afternoon will run in the low to mid-70s so there is plenty of moisture in the air for any storms to tap into – severe or not. Heavy rainfall is also possible.

LOCAL TIMING
Although there remain some differences, most model solutions agree this will be a late-day event for the Tuscarawas Valley. Things become increasingly unstable as we go through the day, so a thunderstorm will be possible just about any time this afternoon. I suspect the best time for severe weather in our area is between 4 pm and 8 pm. That could change somewhat later today but I think that’s a good starting point. With even a low potential of isolated tornadoes, make sure you have a reliable way to get warnings today.

The severe threat will decrease this evening after sunset.

TROPICAL STORM DEBBY
The latest update from the National Hurricane Center indicates that impacts from TS Debby will stay well to the east of our area over the weekend. It’s actually looking like a very pleasant weekend here in the Valley with mostly sunny skies and daytime temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80°.

While there is no guarantee of severe weather today, there is a potential that storms late in the day could be severe. Be weather-aware later today. Thanks for relying on TUSCWeather for your local weather updates. – Joe
