Clipper System to Bring Snow Showers Tonight and Friday; Increasing Confidence in a Disruptive Winter Storm Early Next Week

The chances for snow showers will increase after midnight tonight as a cold front travels southeastward from the Midwest and continues through the upper Ohio Valley on Friday.

North American Model (NAM3k) simulated radar at 5 am Friday.

As of Thursday morning, a general 1″ to 3″ can be expected in our area Through Friday night with this system. It will also usher in colder temperatures across our area for the weekend.

After the early Friday morning snowfall this will become more of a lake-enhanced snow event Friday afternoon and evening. Expect changeable conditions including the possibility of snow squalls. These quick heavy bursts of snow can cause temporary whiteouts and patchy slick spots.

Confidence is increasing that a disruptive winter storm will bring impactful snow accumulation to the east-central Ohio region late Sunday through Monday of next week.

Model differences exist in the system’s exact placement and track as of Thursday morning. This will likely be a large system and widespread snow accumulation is becoming likely along the I-70 corridor during the period.

GFS Model, Snow through Monday PM

the models have been in good agreement with the development of the storm for several days. What they don’t agree on is how far north or south the system will track. This north/south track will have implications on not only snow amounts but also the potential for ice.

It’s too soon yet for any sort of meaningful snow amounts. I’ll try to have that sometime Saturday morning. I would figure out shovelable snow accumulation and road/highway impacts being an issue early next week.

Temperatures will remain cold for an extended period so any snow we happen to get here on out will stick around for quite a while.

Stay tuned to future updates regarding next week’s storm potential and what we might be looking at there in the Tuscarawas Valley. I wish you and yours all the best during the new year. Enjoy the weather and be safe out there.
