Yet another strong low pressure system will move into east-central Ohio late in the week that will bring impactful weather to the Tuscarawas Valley Friday through Sunday.
Current modeling suggests this latest storm system will follow a very similar track as our most recent storm. However, the weekend system could be a little stronger and track a bit closer to the area. Current data suggests that precipitation initiates Friday afternoon in our area. There can be a brief period of wet snow at the onset but that will quickly change to all rain as warm air gets pulled into the storm.
As with our latest storm, strong winds will be a concern with this system as well. Advisory-level wind gusts can be expected late Friday into Saturday. Gusts of 35 mph to 45 mph are a high probability. While rainfall is not expected to be quite as much with this next storm, most of the east-central Ohio region could receive around an inch of additional rain. Since our local locations have already received just over an inch of rain recently, this could bring additional flooding concerns.
Arctic air will wrap into the system as it departs to the east on Saturday. Rain will change over to snow showers early Saturday morning but we’re not expecting much in the way of snow accumulation. All our neighborhoods will end up with less than an inch.
Wind gusts could be even stronger on the backside of this system on Saturday with a potential for gusts to top 45 mph at times. A High Wind Warning in all or parts of the area on Saturday afternoon is highly possible. The cumulative effects of recent rain and the additional rain expected on Friday, coupled with winds gusting at or above 40 mph, will amplify the potential for tree damage and power outages. This will be a big concern, especially on Saturday when wind gusts could exceed 40/45 mph.
I do not anticipate any major changes in the storm forecast over the next 24 hours. We may have to make some adjustments regarding the timing and precipitation amounts but any changes going forward shouldn’t be other than minor. I will, of course, keep you updated on any changes that might pop up in another update on Thursday evening.
SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY
Once that cold arctic air arrives on Saturday it will stick around for quite a bit. The Climate Prediction Center 6 to 10-day forecast below-average temperatures going forward. With much colder air locked in over the area we can also expect occasional snow showers and accumulating snow through the period.
