An Early Heads Up: Strong Gusty Winds Possible Wednesday and Thursday

Our weather will turn very spring-like on Tuesday and especially on Wednesday when temperatures across the Valley will warm to the low-60s.

However, a strong storm system will advance eastward into the Great Lakes region Tuesday night, spreading rain showers into the Valley Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. By mid- to late morning, a dry period and possibly some clearing will be possible. Should this clearing develop as shown in today’s modeling, instability will increase.

GFS Model: Wednesday afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has hoisted a Marginal Risk (Level 1 on a scale of 1-5) for the potential of severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind gusts for Wednesday afternoon and evening. A Marginal Risk means that there is lower confidence in severe thunderstorms impacting our area.

In addition to the severe thunderstorm threat, gusty winds are likely regardless of any thunderstorms on Wednesday through Thursday. Wind gusts in the 30 – 40 mph range will be possible throughout the period.

Rain is expected to continue Wednesday evening until a strong cold front crosses the region. Rain will mix with and eventually become all snow west to east as much colder air rushes in behind the front. Snow showers are then expected to continue on Thursday. The chances of snow showers will decrease Thursday evening.

Dry weather looks likely on Friday, but chances of snow and rain will return with another system Friday night and Saturday.

I’ll post more details on Tuesday with the approximate timing of Wednesday’s severe threat for our area.
