Today’s Wind and the Valley Weekend Outlook

A potent storm system traveling east across the upper Great Lakes region today will support the potential for strong wind gusts across the region today and tonight.

NAM3k Model 8:00 AM Friday to 8:00 AM Saturday.

Wind gusts in our area will likely peak during the afternoon and early evening in our area with gusts having a decent potential of reaching 45-50 mph. Probabilities from the National Blend of Models indicate a 70% to 80% probability of 45 mph gusts or higher.

NWS Pittsburgh has hoisted a Wind Advisory for all of the east-central Ohio region until midnight tonight. NWS Cleveland has a High Wind Warning in effect for counties in northeast Ohio, where wind gusts could be slightly higher.

The storm system will also lift a warm front through our area this morning. A light rain/snow mix may accompany the front. This will quickly change to light rain/drizzle as temperatures quickly warm as the morning progresses. Little or no snow accumulation is likely locally, given the warm ground temperature.

Winds will remain elevated through a good portion of the overnight before the storm system travels far enough east. Things should settle down by sunrise Saturday morning.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Our weekend weather looks fairly uneventful. A mix of clouds and sun with daytime temperatures near average is likely on Saturday. Skies remain about the same for Sunday, but temperatures will warm a bit higher with daytime highs near 70°.

THE NEXT SYSTEM
The next weather system we’re watching is due to arrive Sunday night into Monday. This one may pull in Gulf moisture capable of producing periods of heavy rain into parts of eastern Ohio, mainly on Monday. Temperatures will still be somewhat warm at least to start on Monday. A cold front associated with the system will cross, and, depending on timing, could bring a low-end risk of strong storms.

GFS MODEL Monday AM

In addition, this will be another strong low pressure system and could also produce another strong wind risk. Much will depend on the timing of the front. This is another sharp cold front, and temperatures will take a nose-dive on Monday after it crosses the region. We will likely see some snow showers by Monday evening.

Thanks for reading our local weather update. Have a great weekend!
