Severe Storms are Possible on Sunday with a Potent Cold Front

A warm front lifting through eastern Ohio Saturday night will pump warm southerly air into east-central Ohio on Sunday. Temperatures across the region will quickly warm to the mid to upper 70s by Sunday afternoon.

Low pressure traveling across the Great Lakes region will drag a cold front across the region. Showers and thunderstorms will likely develop ahead of and along the front. With a warm and unstable air mass in place, some thunderstorms could be severe and capable of producing damaging winds and large hail during the late afternoon through evening period.

There is also a low, but non-zero risk of isolated tornadoes with Sunday’s severe storms along and south of I-70.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the region in a Level 2, Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening.

The timing of the front’s arrival will have a big impact on where and when severe storms are more likely to develop. As of Saturday morning, there remains some model disagreement on the timing of the front. Hopefully, that will get ironed out at some point today.

After peaking in the mid to upper 70s on Sunday, temperatures will take a nosedive on Monday. Daytime highs on Monday afternoon will only reach the low to mid-40s across our area. That’s a roughly 30-degree difference.
