Mainly Rain and Gusty Wind With This Next Weather System

Posted by Joe on Monday, Jan 8, 11:00 AM

High pressure will bring mundane, quiet weather today with seasonal temperatures across the Valley. Clouds will increase tonight as our next storm system approaches the region. While this next low won’t bring a lot of snow to the area, it will bring a variety of weather features on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Precipitation will advance and spread into east-central Ohio before sunrise Tuesday morning. Temperatures will be borderline and there can be a short period where we could see some sleet or freezing rain to start. I’m not highly confident in any frozen precipitation developing around the Valley early in the morning but I can’t rule the possibility completely out either.

Warm air will get pulled into the system quickly so any sleet or frozen precipitation will not last long and impacts locally will be minimal if at all. Rain will be the primary precipitation type with this system on Tuesday. You can expect a fairly steady rain through the daytime hours.

Colder air will wrap into the system this evening as winds shift out of the northwest and we will see a changeover to snow showers later tonight. Snow showers continue then into Wednesday.

The other weather feature we’ll have to deal with is wind. Winds will begin picking up before sunrise Tuesday and strong wind gusts will be with us for much of the day. Gusts locally could be in the 40 mph to 45 mph range at times during the highest winds Tuesday afternoon. The winds will relax some Tuesday night but it will remain quite blustery and windy through Wednesday.

Below is my attempt to map what and when we can expect over the next couple of days out in our area. Again, confidence in that brief period of mixed frozen precipitation early in the morning is pretty low but it is something you need to watch for if you’re heading out to work or school.

This doesn’t appear to be a big snow producer. Most of the snow will occur on Wednesday and it will be blowing around with those gusty winds. Accumulation locally should stay under an inch.

Snow showers will taper off Wednesday afternoon ending by Wednesday evening as the system pulls away from the region. Thursday looks to bring a return to calmer weather but yet another storm system moves into the region on Friday. The weekend system will likely take a similar path as the Tuesday/Wednesday system but the timing will be different. The weekend system will also usher in our first real taste of sustained cold of the season.
