The Air Will Have a Tropical Feel This Week; T-storm Chances Return Wednesday and Thursday

Today marks the middle of meteorological summer, and we all know what that brings – heat and humidity, and thunderstorms. While the air temperatures won’t be extreme the next several days, conditions will turn humid. That extra moisture in the air will push heat indices to the upper 90s. Some spots across the region could even see the heat index reach 100° for a short time.

Thursday looks like the worst this week as dewpoints climb well above 70°. It will feel very tropical out there. Nighttime air temperatures won’t cool off much below 70° either, so we won’t get a break at night.

There is not much chance of thunderstorms today in our area, but the atmosphere will become more unstable late in the week. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will be more likely on Wednesday and Thursday. With the abundant source of moisture available, heavy downpours are likely to occur.

And, there won’t be much air movement aloft to push storms along, so they’ll be more likely to be slow-movers. This could lead to flash flooding in some locations, especially on Wednesday.

If you work outdoors, in a non-air-conditioned environment, or if you’re susceptible to the effects of hot temperatures, take care of yourself over the next several days.

Temperatures locally will likely return to a more routine level over the weekend, but it will remain humid. Temperatures will turn hot once again next week.
