A Stormy Independence Day Valley Forecast

1:00 PM 07/02/2024

While temperatures across the Tuscarawas Valley will warm to the mid-80s this afternoon under bright blue skies, it will be the last low-humidity day for quite a while. Dewpoints across the area will stay in the comfortable mid-50s range today and tonight.

Wednesday, however, will be a different story. We will remain dry through the bulk of the day tomorrow but the humidity will be on an uphill climb. Locally the day will start very pleasant with area dewpoints in the mid-50s but it will turn noticeably more humid as the afternoon wears on. Those dewpoints will be right around 70° or so by 5:00 pm.

It will also be hot on top of that humidity. Afternoon highs in our local area will peak at around 90° to 92° under mostly sunny skies.

We really could use some rain and the good news is we will finally get some. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will gradually increase late Wednesday as a cold front slides south through eastern Ohio. This front will eventually stall over southern Ohio and keep the chances of showers and storms going in our area through Friday.

Unfortunately, that means that showers and thunderstorms will threaten our area from time to time through Independence Day. I don’t think it will rain all the time, but there can be an occasional shower or storm in any neighborhood at just about any time Wednesday through Friday.

Since there are lots of outdoor activities going on around the Fourth of July, I’ll just drop a little reminder here.

There is not much in the way of a severe threat through Friday but summertime thunderstorms can get rowdy pretty quickly. Any isolated storm could bring strong wind gusts. Given the high dewpoints there is plenty of moisture in the air storms can tap into. Any storms could produce a quick burst of moderate to heavy rainfall. If your neighborhood happens to get dumped on a few times, you could see some localized water issues.

Regardless of any rain or storms, it’s going to be warm and humid through the end of the week. Daytime highs, other than Wednesday, look to max out in the mid to upper 80s. That’s not unusually hot but those elevated dewpoints will make it feel a bit warmer.

THE UPCOMING WEEKEND
The weekend looks mainly dry at this time. Saturday could see a shower or a rumble of thunder but the odds look fairly low (30-percent-ish) with today’s data. Daytime highs will remain in the mid-80s both Saturday and Sunday. It won’t be quite as humid but it’ll be muggy for sure.

Happy Independence Day. Enjoy. Be safe.
